Nymphs
This species is the embodiment of nature itself. Nymphs are creatures that inhabit trees and bodies of fresh water. They appear in the shape of beautiful young women, who may also exhibit some physical characteristics of their habitat. Nymphs are generally very shy and do not approach humans, however, occasionally their curiosity will get the best of them. These are the only times when nymphs will decide to show themselves. While not invisible, these creatures may be considered a sort of “spirit” of nature, and thus they come and go, and assume forms related to their habitats as they wish. These abilities make them very elusive and pretty much undetectable.
Nymphs are usually “bound” to one particular tree or part of a body of water (note that not all trees nor water have nymphs bound to them). In other words, their livelihoods are determined by the health of that particular specimen, and should any harm come to it, the same damage will be done to the nymph. The death of their bonded counterpart will result in their death. Unfortunately, nymphs are very pacifistic creatures and will not harm anyone even at the expense of their own lives. They prefer using methods of misleading and trickery for protection. They are especially wary of humans because of this reason, as humans are the ones most responsible for the destruction of their homes. They get along quite well with elves, as their mindset is similar on the protection of nature.
Should you be lucky enough to encounter a nymph, be aware that communication might be difficult. Nymphs do not speak any human language, nor are they telepathic, but those who’ve heard their voices often say that they sound like the wind rustling through the leaves or the gurgling of streams. This species also tends to be very innocent and trusting, which makes them very easy to exploit—and this has been done many times in the past. To take this course of action is regarded by most non-human species as barbaric and heinous, as though one were violating nature itself. Furthermore, nymphs are very delicate creatures and perish easily outside of their natural habitat. Being the caretakers of their habitats too, forests will begin to die and rivers will become muddy without the attention of nymphs.
