Gnomes
Small humanoids who are only slightly larger than fairies. Gnomes enjoy hanging around people’s houses, and should you be lucky enough to have one (there’s usually only one per house), these creatures are very helpful in the home. Though not invisible, gnomes tend to be elusive and don’t like to show themselves around humans. They enjoy house-making, and cleaning and doing other odd chores are things they usually undertake in the homes they occupy. Occupants might find fresh flowers in the vase, their garden weeded, or even the shoes that needed mending to be fixed.
Gnomes do not view these chores as something they should be compensated for, and are actually quite happy to carry them out. However, compensation is greatly appreciated and might even bring good luck to the household. Offerings of clothing or milk and bread with honey are typically popular with gnomes. When these things are presented as payment, however, gnomes consider their work done and will leave the house.
In spite of their cheerful natures, do not spite or upset a gnome. This is usually done by deliberately damaging the work they’ve completed, such as throwing out the fresh flowers they’ve picked or carelessly messing up rooms they’ve cleaned. The same reaction can be triggered by demolishing the place the gnome decided to make its home. They typically keep their niches in the walls or unused cupboards. When angered, these creatures will either leave the household or become quite malicious and engage in pranks of increasing severity. It is rare, but not unknown, for their vindictive actions to cause death. Once angered, gnomes can only be appeased by an adequate offering of reconciliation, or by the occupants who angered them to leave the house.
With the exception of provocation, gnomes are generally quite docile and mild-mannered. They do not usually value interaction with their human hosts, and prefer to stay hidden when their hosts are out and about. Due to this, they are mostly active during human working hours, and at night-time.
